Reminiscence, The Home of Utopias
Isn't it funny how we always try to emulate the past? For thousands of years, every empire near the Mediterranean wanted be the next Rome. Everyone saw it as a perfect society, almost a utopia. However many of these nations were way more advanced than the Romans ever were. Technology, philosophical ideas, and even ways of living have advanced so much since the time of the Romans. And they have become so engrained in our daily lives that it is sometimes hard to imagine a world without them. So whenever people think of the Romans, these ideas are so engrained into our sense of being that we imagine the Romans with the same ideas as we have. We dont think of the rampant inequality, the brutality, or the struggles that they had to endure on a daily basis. We only focus on the good things, and the bad parts just get covered up. And that sort of thing happens all the time. Think back to before Covid. Just hanging out with your friends, enjoying the sun, maybe going out to eat. It sounds nice right? Thinking of it now, it almost seems like a utopia. We forget everything that sucked back then. When was the last time that you got sick? It's been ages right? Maybe it hasn't been since before quarantine. Now think about how often you were sick before Covid. It was probably multiple times a year. Your entire life would be disrupted because of it. But when you think back to before Covid, thats not what you think of. You only remember the good parts. Im not saying that life is better now than it was back then, but it definitely wasn't the bliss that we all think we remember. And I think the same thing applies to history. Have you ever heard the phrase "back in the good old days"? Thats a perfect example of what I'm talking about. The "good old days" honestly weren't that great, but people still act like they were this golden age. People have started doing this to wider parts of society. Now its fairly common to go online and hear people talk about how great communism was, or start praising the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was a terrible place to live in, but people still act like it was a borderline utopia. Please, wipe all the glitter off your memories before you try to act on them. We dont need another Soviet Union, its only a utopia in your mind.
